I Am Culturally Annoyed

I am culturally annoyed over the Asian face editing in this software marketing presentation. Why on earth is there a problem with the size of Asian eyes, and why should eye creases be added ? This simply perpetuates stereotypes and generates desire in impressionable women to have cosmetic surgery, if nothing else.

DNA used in graphene ribbon production

http://cleantechnica.com/2013/09/07/frankenstein-move-over-a-new-graphenedna-monster-is-in-town/

"some strange and unanticipated results could come about when you combine DNA, the “blueprint of life” with graphene, an exotic form of carbon that is 200 times stronger than steel"

Have been de-linking Facebook from all my other social media accounts. I realise how insinuous FB is.

Singapore

Good news:
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2013-09-05/singapore-overtakes-japan-as-asia-s-biggest-foreign-exchange-hub
Perhaps a result of Japan falling.

Not-so-good news:
http://www.businessweek.com/news/2013-09-01/singapore-stocks-slump-most-in-developed-world-southeast-asia
The economy is very open, and it will surely be affected by the downturn in the region, which comprises developing countries.

Fodder for some political ends, but I'm not interested in that.

Tough talk on short sellers - Channel NewsAsia

Tough talk on short sellers - Channel NewsAsia

Can't argue with this article. Shortsellers will knock over retail investors, but much worse is the magnitude of the transient price plunge arising from shortseller tactics. Prevention appears to be in ensuring better reporting, because that's what shortseller analysts are going to use to justify their tactic of taking short positions.

My Other Blogs and Curated Magazines-Boards

http://ibr-remote.blogspot.sg/
I'll probably post to my Blogger blog on subjects which are related to finance, corporate matters and economics. I might include photos or some such. I have several other blogspot blogs, which are very focused on my personal interest areas, and serve merely as references.

Yes, I have a Tumblr account !!
Seriously though, I think I'll keep my own real life projects recorded there, such as my currently on-hold papercraft BJD prototyping.  Expect more photos from me at this place, as I'll show progress when there is some !

My Wordpress blog.  I'll activate it to show developmental aspects of my Visual Novel Otome Game and related items.

This blog you are reading now.  I will put day-to-day real life real person stuff here, including my anime and manga interests, my 3D computer graphics interest, my comments and opinions, and various other items which may appear as nonsensical rubbish to others.

I post most of my 3D CG renders here, but I do sometimes post journal entries related to art or computer graphics.

"Appoint an audit firm with the relevant industry experience".  Makes one wonder about how things had been going, prior to these rules being enforced.

Short selling of shares put firms under scrutiny - Channel NewsAsia

Short selling of shares put firms under scrutiny - Channel NewsAsia

My comment:
Small retail investors like myself are bound to be knocked sideways by shortseller talk-downs of specific counters.  It's a most unfriendly behaviour on the part of greedy profiteers.  Fortunately, larger stakeholders won't allow shortsellers to get away with too much of the cherry pie.  It's also important that listed entities look sharp to protect themselves from shortselling attacks; it reflects poorly on corporate governance when an entity comes under attack in this manner.

Traditions vs real Life

After decades of celebrating Chinese heritage and traditions during the Chinese New Year, our immediate and extended families suffered a total breakdown this year.  With the patriach of the extended family gone (my late Dad), and Mum still in mourning, the annual grand gathering of the clan went on haitus for the Year of the Snake.

With Mum knocked sideways by the break in hostessing momentum, and close family members spending time away from the country adding to the sense of displacement, the so-called family re-union was made up of just a remnant of the clan.

I felt that Mum should no longer host the annual 160-person re-union in future, because of her age and her hard work hosting the event during the past three decades.  Immediately, other family members slammed me down as not having a say.  They then went on to tell Mum to re-instate the big clan gathering next year.  Say what ? Considering that I hire the staff to assist her during the big run-up to the huge party and chip in for expenses, surely I do have a say as well.

If this selfish thinking continues on their part, I shall quietly book myself a flight out of the country during all future Chinese New Year holidays.  In fact, I have decided I shall be away during every subsequent Chinese New Year period with immediate effect.

China's uber-wealthy and the law in China

"In a business environment in which personal connections and favors -- referred to as guanxi in Chinese -- predominate, many tycoons have amassed large fortunes without concern of rules and regulations. However, such a fast and loose atmosphere can cut both ways."....

...."The Economist noted that despite the number of high level cases coming to light in the country, many more remain hidden: "If they wanted to, China's authorities could probably find grounds for accusing most of the country's richest people of bending (if not breaking) the rules. But China's legal culture thrives on the principle of 'killing the chicken to scare the monkeys.' " ....

... "In a country where so many struggle to get ahead, such gaudy displays of wealth present a challenge to social stability. For that reason, the Chinese government has a political and economic incentive to scrutinize its richest citizens."...

..."Wang Xiaolu, deputy director of the National Economic Research Institute, estimated that China's gray economy is worth $1.47 trillion annually and growing fast, indicating that many of the wealthy engage in clever accounting to disguise their true net worth. Consequentially, China's income inequality has grown worse. Less than one percent of the China's population controls about 70 percent of the country's wealth, an issue threatening the very foundation of China's economic miracle."
