Literary Analysis

I ain't no scholar of literature, so this sort of thing simply impresses me and makes me interested to find out more.

Book Review and the East vs West literary backgrounds of reviewers

Let's look at two reviewer's pieces on David Peace's Occupied City, his second book in his planned trilogy.

First, read the what the West-based reviewer has to say:
http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/book_reviews/article6733250.ece

Then read what an East-based reviewer has to say:
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/mail/fb20090802a1.html

Now ain't that a wonderful insight ?

I want to read the book.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, sees the risk of similar incidents as companies downsize in response to the troubled economy.

"As belts tighten and the credit crunch continues to hit around the world, more and more companies will be making the decision to make staff and contractors redundant," he said in an online post. "...[A] disaffected employee could create havoc inside your organization so make sure that appropriate security is in place."

Yu Sheng Lo Hei - Lunar New Year phrases

I beg to differ with all the sage and erudite research published at various authoritative websites by academic researchers.

The following, according to my tradition-abiding mother, comprise the correct, final and only version of the auspicious phrases to spout during the Yu Sheng Lo Hei (Fish Salad Lucky Toss).

From her undated newspaper clipping, sourced in Singapore, with my comments in parentheses:

For each ingredient, say this ( Mandarin pronunciation):

Raw Fish:  Nian Nian You Yu - for abundance  ( every year you shall have abundance)

Lime: Da Ji Da Li, for good luck ( sorry, dunno )

Five Spice Powder and Pepper: Wu Fu Lin Men, for good fortune ( sorry, dunno )

Plum Sauce: Tian Tain Mi Mi, for a honeyed year ( Every day shall be a sweet day)

White Radish: Wan Shi Ru Yi, for success ( In ten thousand things shall you be successful)

Red Chilli: Zhao Cai Jin Bao, for prosperity ( I think this means a lot of gold entering your purse )

Lettuce:  He Qi Sheng Cai, for harmony and wealth ( exactly as it says)

Carrot: Bu Bu Gao Sheng, for eminence ( With each step you gain eminence)

Pickled Red Ginger:  Hong Yun Dang Tou, for good luck ( sorry, dunno )

Oil:  Fu Yun Nian Nian, for good fortune and luck ( Prosperity gathers each year )

Peanuts: Jin Sha Man Tang,  for prosperity ( Gold sand fills your halls)

Crispy crackers: bian di huang jin, for prosperity ( The entire floor of your home be filled with gold )

When tossing:  utter anything auspicious, including sheng yi xing long, for brisk business ( business with spirit of dragon ?), and sheng ti jian kang, for good health ( body be healthy).

Damn Stupid Financial Institutions

I won't name the bank, stock broking house, custodial vehicle, nor equities involved.

All I can say is this: when you buy foreign or off-shore counters, do YOU ask you banker for details of their custody vehicle ? Is it important where they hold the offshore scripts ? YOU BET IT IS !!

Case in point: I invested in non-China non-Hong Kong equities. I only find out that the custodial service uses a vehicle in Hong Kong when I receive a letter from my stockbrokers informing me that China is imposing a 10 per cent withholding tax on corporate entities parked there - guess what, the custodial service is a corporate entity.

What the fuck ?! My non-China non-Hong Kong holdings are subject to 10 per cent withholding tax simply because the idiot brokerage uses a custodial service based in Hong Kong ?!

What the shit !!!

This is the worse time ever to liquidate my offshore holdings in that service.

Just let me say this - thank goodness I did not go along with the Lehman mini-bonds which the main bank was offering. Those are now in default, because Lehman has gone bust.

First Formula One Night Race - Alonso Wins !!

Wow, it was the most dramatic ( if not historical ) Night Race for the F1 Grand Prix.

Winner Alonso, driving for team Renault, started in last place ( 15th position ), because the day before during the Preliminary Qualifying Race, his car sprang a leak. He drove extremely well and deserves the win.

But it was a complicated and exciting Final. Team Ferrari started with Massa in the lead position.

But very early in the Final, Piquet of Renault crashed his car, causing the Safety Car ( MacLaren Mercedes ) to rule the circuit and several other teams jumped into the pit-stop opportunity, leaving a couple others out but needing to pit-stop. These two cars were low on fuel ( their starting strategy ), so they had to make pit-stops during the Safety Car round, which earned them penalty 10 seconds stop time.

That threw the strategies of all teams into total chaos.

Then Massa made his pit-stop and some screw-up caused him to pull away from the pit-stop team servicing his car, drive over one of his mechanics, and leave with the fuel nozzle still attached !!. He narrowly missed another car on the main circuit, while doing so. From 1st position, he fell to 15th.

Later in the race, another crash ( car of Team *something* India ) because of wet surface at a corner, brought the Safety Car out again. Not entirely that driver's fault, but because other cars had bunched up due to one car getting into a bit of a problem at the corner.

Finally, the remaining Ferrari car crashed against the side wall and Team Ferrari was out of the race. Because of this crash, the Japanese driver moved up from 9th to 8th place, and that earned him a Grand Prix point ( awarded to top 8 only ).

Now drinking red wine in celebration of the race.

"Another slightly less drastic example comes in the guise of London Asia Capital and its private equity offshoot London Asia Chinese Private Equity Fund Ltd. Again, this seemed like a great idea at the time - a specialist fund, advised by London Asia, that would invest in small-to-mid cap companies about to be floated or already on Western markets. To be fair, most of its investee companies seem to have prospered, but the timing was dreadful. Chinese stocks are down at least 50 per cent from recent highs and heading even lower, with small caps particularly badly hit. That huge downward pressure - Indian small-cap investors have suffered similar falls - has made valuing Chinese investments very difficult and the parent company London Asia recently suspended its shares while the management worked out what the company was actually worth."

Nanodielectrics face their biggest test in space - R & D

Nanodielectrics face their biggest test in space - R & D

Quote:
"While silicon dioxide has historically been the dominant dielectric material for silicon-based electronics, Marks and his research group have been trying to create next-generation semiconductor and dielectric materials with properties that silicon and silicon dioxide can't provide—such as transparency, printability and physical flexibility. The dielectric material would need to be thin, be a good insulator and be able to stabilize the charges moving through the semiconductor by having what is called a high dielectric constant, which is the relative ability of the material to store an electric charge for a given applied field strength. What resulted were SANDs, which Marks and his team created through a dipping process that creates self-assembled molecular thin films. Not only do SANDs meet all the requirements for next-generation dielectrics, but they were also found to be resistant to radiation.NASA is interested in SANDs because the radiation in space severely damages electronics—especially dielectrics, since silicon dioxide captures the radiation, which then forms holes and electrons and irreversibly builds up a destructive charge in the transistor. For long space trips—like the current mission to Mars—such electronics are exposed to years of radiation. Early tests with nuclear reactors showed that SANDs are largely resistant to such radiation damage."

Superconducting State Can Be Induced By High Pressure In So-called High-temperature Superconductors

ScienceDaily (2008-05-21) -- Superconductors can convey more than 150 times more electricity than copper wires because they don't restrict electron movement, the essence of electricity. But to do this, the materials have to be cooled below a very low, so-called, transition temperature, which often makes them impractical for widespread use. Now for the first time, scientists have found that in addition to chemical manipulation, the superconducting state can be induced by high pressure in so-called high-temperature superconductors.

Towards Cloaking Visible Light: Three-dimensional Metamaterials For The Optical Wavelength Range

ScienceDaily (2007-12-24) -- Last year researchers from Duke University stunned the world when they announced a cloaking device for the microwave range. This device made use of metamaterials that had a negative refractive index for electromagnetic radiation. The metamaterials were carefully designed split-ring resonators with a structure size much smaller than the wavelength. Only 10 stacked layers of metamaterials were necessary to achieve the desired invisibility effect. Now researchers have succeeded in manufacturing a stacked split-ring metamaterial for the optical wavelength range.

Few female execs in bureaucracy
Kyodo News
The ratio of women among executive government officials was only 1.7 percent as of January 2005, the National Personnel Authority said Monday.

The government says it is trying to raise the figure to 30 percent by 2020. To do so, more woman have to be hired, but the ratio of women among newly employed fast-track bureaucrats is only 21.1 percent, the authority said.

"We will urge ministries and agencies to recruit more women while making efforts to raise interest among female students in working for governmental organizations by holding seminars and other ways," an official said.

Photos of Nite-time Eiffel Tower are illegal

Image copyright
Images of the Eiffel Tower have long been in the public domain; however in 2003, the operating company SNTE installed a new lighting display on the tower, which they then copyrighted. The effect is to put the night-time image of the tower under copyright. It follows that it is no longer legal to publish contemporary photographs of the tower without permission. The imposition of copyright is not without some controversy. The Director of Documentation for SNTE, Stéphane Dieu, commented in January 2005 "It is really just a way to manage commercial use of the image, so that it isn't used in ways we don't approve". However, it also has the effect of prohibiting tourist photographs of the tower. [5]

I think it may be a very good idea for every tourist landmark in the world to come under such copyright conniving, daytime or night, and someone will find a way, no doubt.

Shit Hits The Fan

Oh my, oh my, so nice to read the Mr Brown Blog:
HERE
You will get a rough reading of sentiment from a small island state. This little tropical Republic, one of the most highly wired nations for the Internet, also boasts a damn bloody big paddle welded by the Upstairs for anyone who is naughty enough to mis-use the Internet. And we don't mean porn.

However, that is not my focus of today's whine.

I want to say something to Jesus who others say is the Christ.

My Lord, it is time you considered returning to your creation and biting that Delete button on your sword in your mouth, by using your teeth. The place has degenerated into a cesspool, and humanity has sunk beneath the level of dignity of even the animals, the way mankind commits abominations against itself.

This year's series has been the worst ever !

The final result is no proof of superior skills of the Italy team against the France team. Only sheer luck.

So too for the semi-finals in which penalty kicks were used to decide the matches.

Boo Italy ! France had a tougher time working their way to the Finals in their group. They really ARE the better team !

Meanwhile, there are not enough service jobs in Europe to put everybody to work. The social benefits paid to the out-of-work increase the tax burden on labor income, which in turn discourages women from full-time work. The leisure trap thus keeps both the best educated and the least educated out of the workplace.

Saying "goodbye" to the Net

QUOTE:
"If the bill passes the Senate and is signed by the President (of the USA), you can kiss the Net you know "goodbye." Farewell, open networks and open standards. Soon every packet will be subject to inspection and surcharges based on what it carries and who sent it or where it is going.

"The compromise language would have guaranteed that all traffic sent over carrier backbones would be treated equally, regardless of its source or destination. Carriers will be free to target especially profitable traffic for surcharges. "

Now be reasonable. In another short generation, say when the kiddies of today are the middle-agers of tomorrow, the internet will be ruled by the Chinese and Indonesian and Indian populations, who will form the largest individual user base collectively. WHO CARES ABOUT USA LEGISLATION AFFECTING TODAY'S INTERNET ?!

Telcomms conglomerates had really better tune in to this future, if they are talking infrastructure investment over a timeframe of one generation.

Genuine Microsoft Software

I had a repeated failed OS update.
For security reasons, I won't say which one.
I'm pretty darn certain my OS is genuine.

So, I went to the official User Group and looked through other users' problems - plenty of similar complaints.
Check this for the user group
The solution was recommended by an official from the OS company:
Executable file HERE - beware of clicking
Anyway, I prefer not to apply the official patch.

I check my add-remove programs listing. and I see that the update was actually successfully installed some weeks ago !
Someone in the official User Group recommended removing the update, then redoing it.

There is also a place to authenicate the genuineness of one's OS:
HERE
The diagnostic webapge will not work if you use Mozilla Firefox web browser.
Basically, it will tell you that if your browser doesn't have the settings required, there are security settings on Internet Explorer which you need to change if you run this diagnostic. The ActiveX diagnostic will lead you to a webpage to show you haw to make those changes, if you want to.
Genuine Microsoft Software
It's just plain annoying and fucked up.

Lao Zi in Saiyuki ( Fuji TV 2006 version)

Hey, this character rocks !

He's like a heavenly Judge Dredd, but a lot campier, and so funny and weirdly cool as well. He's a squirt of an old fart heavenly god, who travels with his heavenly marshalls to bring the villians to trial, once the Saiyuki team have caught them.

Lao Zi is portrayed as a drama-mama with a preference for stylised exaggerated gestures befitting a heavenly deity, and although he wiggles his bottom a bit, he welcomes the attention of the young ladies, more as a point of vanity, than orientation.

Combined with his heavenly powers, his mannerisms both outrage and evoke laughter. The best character in the series so far.

Deviant Art Forums are not nice / upload policy ugh

Update: Well, I have just posted to the Website Promotion forum at Deviant Art after 3 years. Let's see how other Deviants react this time.

Well, I am a member at the on-line community Deviant Art,have been since 2002.

My first community forum post there was in March 2003, and my last post there (total number of posts equals 5) was April 2003. My member id is ibr-remote, and my member page is http://ibr-remote.deviantart.com

I have long since moved on to nicer, more meaningful, and more useful community forums at RuntimeDNA, Renderosity, DAZ3D, PoserPros, 3DCommune etc etc (including several adult 3D content creation websites).

It is disappointing that the DeviantArt forums have not been a worthwhile experience for me, mostly thanks to the members who had run amock there in 2003. I don't see what the point is in returning there now, though.

Update: I thought I was the only one who was uneasy with DeviantArt's policy on uploaded images, but here's a thread from someone's LiveJournal which shows I am not alone, after 3 years in the wilderness !

Surfer takes world record with eight-mile ride
By Matthew Beard
Published: 11 April 2006

A British surfer has set a world record after riding a single wave for almost eight miles. Steve King, a railway engineer from Gloucestershire, broke the previous record set in Brazil by balancing on his board for one hour and 17 minutes.

He was among 1,000 surfers taking part in a competition on the Severn estuary, which has the second highest tidal range in the world.

The race last Thursday began at Newnham-on-Severn, where the four-foot wave was at its peak, and by the time it had travelled two miles inland, all the competitors - including professionals from the United States and Australia - had come off their boards except Mr King.

"It was the most incredible experience of my life," Mr King said yesterday. "Hundreds of surfers were falling off their boards every minute, but I managed to stay on and keep my nerve. As time went on, people kept shouting encouragement to me from the bank, so I knew then that I had a chance to break the record.

"One hour 17 minutes went by until the wave broke and I was able to crawl out to the bank and find out exactly how far I'd gone. I jumped for joy when I was told I was a record-breaker."

Mr King has been riding with friends from the Severn Bore Surfers Club for more than 20 years. They ride a tidal phenomenon - known as a bore - which occurs when a rush of water is funnelled into the 30-mile estuary's narrow channel.

It starts at the mouth of the estuary at Avonmouth near Bristol and reaches as far inland as Gloucester. The phenomenon occurs 12 times a year during the spring and autumn equinox, when a wave is formed every morning for between two or three days.

Mr King said his experience of the bore kept him on his feet: "[It] was very tiring and mentally draining... but it was worth every second of pain."

The National director of the British Surfing Association, Karen Walton, said the "remarkable sporting feat" was witnessed by a BSA official who confirmed it was a new world record.

Cartoon Network and Production IG Team Up For Toonami Original Series
anounced on 2005-04-02 00:52
Cartoon Network and Production I.G. Join Forces for
First Toonami Original Series

Today at the 2005 Tokyo Anime Fair in Japan, Cartoon Network unveiled the highly anticipated new series, IGPX. Cartoon Network has been pioneer in bringing popular Japanese animation to the U.S., expanding the fan base further than ever expected. Now, Cartoon Network leads the pack once again by partnering with acclaimed animation studio, Production I.G. and Bandai Entertainment to produce IGPX, an original series for Toonami, the Cartoon Network action programming block that first brought animé to wide audiences in the U.S.

IGPX will combine the talents of both Cartoon Network and Production I.G., establishing a new production paradigm. Blending the quality and style of animé with Western storytelling, IGPX will be the first instance of a U.S. cable network working directly with a Japanese animation studio to create an original series. The new original series that uses both traditional and CGI animation will debut in Fall 2005 during Toonami, currently #1 in the U.S. with boys 9-14 and 12-17 for 2005 to date.

“Toonami brought Japanese animation to a new generation of fans in the U.S., showcasing popular animé series like Dragonball Z, The Big O and Yu Yu Hakusho,” said Jim Samples, executive vice president and general manager for Cartoon Network. “Now, Toonami is the first to team up with one of the most respected and well-known animation studios in Japan, Production I.G., with a new approach on production, setting the stage for future co-productions.”

“I am very honored for Production I.G. to collaborate with Cartoon Network, and for our show to be broadcast on the world’s largest animation network, viewed in 160 countries. This co-production relationship with Cartoon Network is what truly motivated our staff to create such an amazing piece of work,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, president of Production I.G.

Production I.G., internationally recognized for creating high-quality animation, including well known properties like Ghost in the Shell, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL and the animé sequences in Kill Bill Vol.1, brings their stylish vision to IGPX. Cartoon Network first partnered with Production I.G. in 2032 to produce five 5-minute episodes of IGPX for an on-air Toonami event in 2003.

In IGPX, the year is 2048 and the “IGPX” has become the world’s most-popular sport. It’s so big that an entire city was built for the racing industry where competitions take place on a huge, 60-mile track called “The Big Eye.” In the “Immortal Grand Prix,” two teams of three Mechs, high-tech fighting machines driven by humans, race at speeds greater than 350 mph. Team Satomi, a crew of amateur pilots, has just won a minor-league championship, vaulting them into the sport’s highest level, the IG-1. Now, the untested rookies of Team Satomi must overcome impossible odds and beat the world’s most skilled and ruthless pilots in the planet’s biggest event, the “Immortal Grand Prix.”

Mitsuru Hongo, director of IGPX said, “I have never been involved in anything in the past where I wished for everyone to watch it so badly. We are all trying very hard to make this the most entertaining animation ever. We will let the audience make the judgment on how different this is from anything else. The story gets more interesting as the season progresses, so I hope everyone stays tuned in to watch more IGPX!”

Bandai Entertainment has also teamed-up with Cartoon Network and Production I.G. to produce IGPX. “This exciting collaboration between Cartoon Network and Production I.G. features an awesome array of Hollywood voice talent and stylized music from Ninja Tune. I’m truly excited that Bandai Entertainment can play a role in what is sure to be an ‘Anime Dream Team,’” said Ken Iyadomi, Executive Vice President of Bandai Entertainment. Bandai Entertainment, a long-time partner with Cartoon Network and its effort to bring Japanese animation to U.S. audiences, will serve as the licensing partner for IGPX.

Production I.G, Inc. is one of the largest and most successful Japanese animation studios. Established in 1987 by Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, the company has produced a variety of cutting edge animation titles including Ghost in the Shell, JIN-ROH, Blood: The Last Vampire, Kill Bill Vol. 1 (animation scenes), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd GIG. An overseas subsidiary and a full time staff of over 200 animators and producers meet the international creative community’s demands. Production I.G provides superior quality animation to the global audience.

Bandai Entertainment Inc. is the premier distributor of Japanese animation on DVD home video and leading Japanese animated licensed programming for television broadcast distribution in North America. Bandai Entertainment Inc. is a subsidiary of Bandai America Inc. In addition to toys and children's entertainment, Bandai Co.'s global interests include video game software, multimedia, music and full-length feature films, vending machines, trading cards, candies, and licensed apparel. Additional company and product information is available at www.bandai-ent.com.

Cartoon Network (CartoonNetwork.com), currently seen in 87.6 million U.S. homes and 160 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s ad-supported cable service offering the best in original, acquired and classic animated entertainment for kids and families. Overnight from 11 p.m.-6 a.m. (ET, PT), Cartoon Network shares its channel space with Adult Swim, a late-night destination showcasing original and acquired animation for young adults 18-34.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, is a major producer of news and entertainment product around the world and the leading provider of programming for the basic cable industry.
